A symbiotic relationship

The Indigenous peoples of Australia share a belief that their relationship with the land, sea and sky – mother earth is symbiotic – in that each depends on the other for survival.  Goombaragin is built on the same principle, ensuring minimum impact on the land and maximum benefit for our family and visitors.

Education, sustainability and self-reliance are the foundations of the Goombaragin Eco Philosophy. Where possible our infrastructure has been designed to:

  • Blend in with the local environment
  • Manage waste
  • Manage people with minimal impact
  • Take care and respect for country and culture

Managing waste appropriately

Goombaragin Eco Retreat has a small waste management facility where waste is strategically separated ready for transportation to Broome.  Guests are encouraged to help us maintain our beliefs by caringly disposing of their rubbish in designated waste disposal areas on site.

All organic material is composited and used to fertilise the vegetable garden bed.  Plastic items such as bottles, containers and glass items are recycled where possible including aluminium cans therefore reducing the impact on Goombaragin and the surrounding land.

We also balance our waste by living off the land - hunting and fishing, gathering cockles, shellfish and mud crabs, cooking bush damper and eating bush foods when in season.

Guests are encouraged to learn how we make use of the seasons to balance our seasonal food source supply.  For example in the cooler months when the wattles flower, we know the fish such as mullets, bluebones and spanish flags (sea perch) are fat and the stingrays and mud crabs offer juicy, sweet flesh. We have different food sources for each of the six seasons we identify in the year.

We also encourage our guests to walk rather than drive around the retreat, and to consider the impact on the environment.
